Certification for School Nurses

The certification for School Nurses is provided by the National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN). The certification validates the nurse's specialized knowledge and skills, indicating their competency to practice effectively and improve student outcomes. The certification exam is named as the NBCSN Examination for Certification of School Nurses.

Step 1: Eligibility and Application

To be eligible for the NBCSN examination, nurses must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license, and have completed at least 1,000 hours of clinical practice in school health services in the past three years. The application for the exam can be completed and submitted online through the NBCSN website.

Step 2: Scheduling the Exam

Upon approval of the application, candidates can schedule their exam. The exam is offered in a computer-based format at PSI Testing Centers located throughout the United States. Available dates and times can be viewed and booked on the PSI website.

Step 3: Taking the Exam

The NBCSN exam is a 3-hour test that includes 200 multiple-choice questions. Candidates should arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes prior to their scheduled exam time with appropriate identification. Results are typically provided immediately after completion of the exam.
