Who is California High School Proficiency Examination ?

What is the CHSPE?

The CHSPE, or the California High School Proficiency Examination, is a testing program established by California law. It provides a means to demonstrate proficiency in the basic educational skills necessary for high school level work. Those who pass the CHSPE receive a Certificate of Proficiency, which by state law is equivalent to a high school diploma.

Step 1: Eligibility and Application

To be eligible to take the CHSPE you must meet one of the following conditions: you are at least 16 years old, or you have been enrolled in the tenth-grade for one academic year or longer, or you will complete one academic year of enrollment in the tenth grade at the end of the semester during which the next regular administration will be conducted. To apply, you must complete an application form available on the CHSPE website (www.chspe.net).

Step 2: Scheduling the Exam

Once your application has been processed and accepted, you will be eligible to schedule your exam. The CHSPE is typically administered twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Specific dates and locations can be found on the CHSPE website. It is recommended to register as early as possible to secure your preferred testing location and date.

Step 3: Taking the Exam

The CHSPE is divided into two sections: English-language Arts and Mathematics. You can take one or both sections during a test administration. The test location will be indicated on your Admission Ticket, which you will receive after your registration is complete. You should arrive at the testing location early and bring several sharpened No. 2 pencils, as well as a valid ID. The exam takes about 3.5 hours to complete.

Location Information

The CHSPE is offered at various locations throughout California. The exact locations can vary from one test administration to another, so it is recommended to check the CHSPE website for the most current information.
