CTCE Early Childhood Sample Test

Mr. Potts teaches a kindergarten class, with children that fit in a range of developmental levels.  One child, Tom, begins the school year at a seemingly lower level than the other children in his class.  At the beginning of the school year, he seems to rely more on gross motor movements and prefers to do activities that use his large muscles instead of his smaller muscles.  When he is encouraged to sit down and draw a picture, he grasps the pencil in a palmer grasp and uses his whole arm to draw with.  As the year goes by, Tom slowly begins to use the pincer grasp and only his lower arm and wrist to create drawings.  By the end of the year, he has full control over the pencil and he has begun to show signs of early printing.  What form of development in Tom has Mr. Potts experienced throughout the year?

Correct Answer:
Proximo-Distal Development

although tom is developing his fine motor skills, what mr. potts is actually seeing is d), proximo-distal development.  this type of development refers to the development from the center of the body to the extremities.  so in tom's case, he is much happier using larger muscles and gross motor, movements that use central muscles and the body.  as the year progresses,so does tom's development and he begins to gain control of his arms and then hands.  this leads to a palmer grasp with full arm movement to the pincer grasp with wrist movements to manipulate the pencil.  for this reason, tom has developed proximo-distal,  from the center (his body and gross motor) to the extremities (pincer grasp and controlled wrist movements).
