NES Social Science - Free Test Sample Questions

In 1777, British General Burgoyne planned to march part of his army from Canada to New York while the rest of the troops sailed south to Philadelphia to deal a final blow to the Continental army.  The armies met at Saratoga. What happened?

Correct Answer:
burgoyne's army lost two battles and surrendered.

in 1777, during the american revolutionary war, british general john burgoyne devised a strategic plan to split the rebellious american colonies in two. his strategy involved leading a significant force southward from canada into new york, aiming to reach albany. meanwhile, a separate british force was to advance northward from new york city, and another contingent was expected to move eastward from lake ontario. the ultimate goal was to isolate new england from the other colonies, weakening the overall american resistance.

general burgoyne's campaign, however, did not unfold as planned. as he moved his troops south, his expedition faced immense logistical challenges and resistance from american forces. the terrain was difficult, characterized by dense forests and swamps, which significantly slowed his progress and complicated the supply lines. additionally, burgoyne's forces were continuously harassed by american militia, further exacerbating their difficulties.

the campaign reached a crucial turning point at the battles of saratoga, which consisted of two significant engagements fought in september and october of 1777. in the first battle of saratoga (battle of freeman's farm), burgoyne's army managed to achieve a tactical victory but suffered considerable casualties. by the time of the second battle of saratoga (battle of bemis heights), burgoyne's situation had grown desperate. his army was low on supplies, his men were demoralized, and no news had come from the other british forces supposed to support him.

on october 17, 1777, facing overwhelming odds and with no relief in sight, general burgoyne was forced to surrender his entire army to the american general horatio gates. this event, known as the surrender of saratoga, marked a significant turning point in the revolutionary war. the american victory at saratoga bolstered morale throughout the colonies and, crucially, helped convince france to enter the war as an ally of the united states. the french involvement brought additional military and financial resources, which were instrumental in the eventual american victory in the war.
