What are the Praxis exams?

What is the Praxis Series of Tests?

You’ve made the decision to pursue a career in teaching and learn that at least one of the Praxis exams is required by most states for educator licensing and certification. What exactly is a Praxis exam?

Praxis Core Academic Skills

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is designed to measure knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. A passing score on the Praxis Core is often required before a candidate begins a teacher education program. These three computer-delivered exams can be taken together for a 5-hour session or separately in 3 individual 2-hour sessions.

  • The Reading exam includes 56 self-selected response questions focusing on comprehension, integration, and analysis of multiple passages.
  • The Writing portion is divided into two parts:  40 self-selected response questions assessing research strategies and revising and improving text and two writing tasks involving argumentative and explanatory writing types.
  • The Mathematics exam is comprised of 56 self-selected response or numeric entry response questions. To ensure math reasoning is assessed, an on-screen calculator is provided to alleviate errors in arithmetic.

Praxis Subject Assessments

The Praxis Subject Assessments are designed to ensure that prospective educators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to begin teaching. Some colleges and universities require these exams prior to the student teaching experience. The Praxis Subject Assessments encompass more than 90 subjects, specialty areas, and techniques. The exams can measure just content, just pedagogy, or both content and pedagogy as it relates to level (Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, or 7-12) and/or subject area. Tests can range from 1 – 4 hours in length depending on the test, and the format can include self-selected response items and/or essay questions.

You should check the ETS website to find out the praxis exams required in your state.

Praxis Special Education Preschool/Early Childhood - FAQ Sample Questions

A 6th grade teacher divides her class into two sides.  She explains that they are going to have a mock debate in class that day.  Side A has to argue for why peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the best.  Side B has to argue for why grilled cheese sandwiches are the best.  Each side has 20 minutes to put the arguments together and then present them to the class. The students quickly get to work brainstorming supportive ideas for their side.   After the debate, the teacher assigns homework in the form of a paper each student will write to follow up on the debate explaining which sandwich should be chosen as the best.  Which form of writing are the students most likely going to use for their homework assignment?

Correct Answer:
persuasive
the form of writing that the students are most likely going to use for their homework assignment is *persuasive writing*. this conclusion is drawn based on the nature of the activity conducted in class, which is a mock debate. a debate inherently involves presenting arguments and persuading the audience to support one viewpoint over another.

during the classroom debate, each side (side a for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and side b for grilled cheese sandwiches) is tasked with arguing why their choice of sandwich is superior. this setup encourages students to think critically about the qualities of each sandwich and to articulate these qualities in a compelling manner. the objective for each side is to convince their classmates that their sandwich is the best.

following the debate, the teacher’s assignment requires the students to write a paper that continues this theme of persuasion. the students are expected to choose one of the sandwiches and argue in favor of their choice as the best sandwich. this task aligns perfectly with persuasive writing, where the writer's goal is to convince the reader of a particular position or viewpoint.

in their papers, students would likely utilize the arguments discussed during the debate, reinforcing them with additional reasons, examples, or personal preferences to strengthen their case. the persuasive essay will not only reflect their ability to analyze and choose between the two options but will also demonstrate their skills in persuasive writing by influencing the reader’s opinion through well-constructed arguments.

other forms of writing, such as narrative, how-to, or compare/contrast, do not align as closely with the objectives of this assignment. narrative writing focuses on storytelling, how-to writing explains a process, and compare/contrast writing would involve discussing both sandwiches equally rather than advocating for one. in contrast, persuasive writing directly supports the assignment’s goal of arguing in favor of one sandwich, making it the most appropriate and likely choice for the students’ homework.
