WEST-NES Mathematics Sample Test

1 of 5

Mrs. Kranke has several organizers with colored tabs: green, purple, red, blue, and yellow. Since the purple tab is for contact information in each organizer, she wants that color first in each organizer. However, she wants the order of the remaining four colors to be different for each organizer. How many different color arrangements can she have using all five colors?

Correct Answer:

24

the color of the first tab is fixed, so it has one possibility. once the first color is removed, we have 4 possibilities for the second tab. once the second color is removed, we have 3 possibilities for the third tab, 2 for the fourth, and 1 for the fifth. we determine the number of combinations by multiplying the possibilities.
         1 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24
